Wanna See Something Adorable?...Or, Julia Gets Deep (In Something)

Having baby turkeys for the first time has been quite an adventure. The poults were more fragile than chicks at first, but they grew much faster. There were a couple times we weren't sure that our little turkeys were going to make it...but now they are sturdier and larger than our pullets, even though they are four weeks younger.

Both our pullets and the poults have outgrown their brooder, so we built a chicken tractor for them until they are big enough to free range without worrying about predators. We kept both species together, since that is probably how we will house this flock.

We put everyone in the tractor together, and the cutest little thing happened.

One of the turkeys, obviously a Tom, started strutting.

It was absolutely adorable to see this little fluffy ball of white, about half the size of a football, strutting like a toughie. It was almost like he couldn't control it.

You could just see him thinking - Wow! I guess I'm a Tom! Whoa - strutting again! What on earth is going on with my tail?

And then, he attacked my camera.

We, of course, quickly changed his name from Snow White to something more manly. Two gender confused poultry in the family are quite enough, what with poor Ruby Stan the Rooster and Jesse the Rooster, aka The Chicken Formerly Known As Crazy Hair Bernice.

It got me thinking (and its always trouble when I'm deep in something)...Isn't it funny how even when we aren't sure what we are, some greater power in the universe won't let us ignore who and what we truly are?

And really, all those excuses we use - I'm not strong enough, I'm not smart enough, I'm not good enough, I'm never ENOUGH...melt away. Because no matter what, we can't deny that we are Children of God.

And when we aren't enough, He fills the gap and makes sure we are more than enough to meet our challenges. On the days when we don't feel tough enough to handle what is ahead of us, God makes us strut, whether we want to or not.

Our proverbial and divine little turkey feathers can't hide what they are - majestic signs of something greater.

You can't deny what you are, no matter how small you may feel.

Welcome to the Henhouse - it's amazing what you can learn from a turkey.

*whispered quietly* "You're not going to eat them, are you?" :)

That is so cool, I hope they work out for you and also I hope they behave and don't attack your camera anymore. :)

I know nothing about farms...are you going to eat them?

Realistically, we are going to eat most of the turkeys. We would like to keep at least one hen and one Tom. The Tom would be a guard "dog" for our chickens. The hen would be to keep him company.

What a great lesson and so true. It is sad how much energy some people put into hiding what they are, mostly because they think they should be something else.
